An excellent way to explore Kielder Water - the largest man made lake in northern Europe - is by the ferry that regularly sails around the lake. Kielder is very sparsely populated and many visitors comment on the spectaculary bright stars at night. Accommodation overview: Originally built in 1856, The Old Chapel was formerly a Presbyterian church located at the entrance to the picturesque village of Bellingham. This stunning Victorian property has since been sympathetically converted to create unique accommodation with every effort made to maintain the building's integrity and style. The massive living space has a high vaulted ceiling, a beautiful rose window in the gable end and tall lancet style windows giving an ambience of grandeur. The wooden floors are scattered with Persian silk rugs. A library/dining area has a cosy wood burning stove to snuggle in front of and the kitchen is very well equipped. A winged staircase leads up to the original pulpit and an open galleried bedroom area overlooks the living space. Accommodation overview: Machin Cottage is a charming Grade II listed end terraced stone cottage located in the high street of the friendly village of Bellingham. The accommodation is spread over three floors and the lounge boasts exposed beams and the welcoming comfort of an open fire. Bellingham is a picturesque village perched at the edge of the Northumberland National Park and where there are ample facilities all within a gentle stroll from Machin Cottage, including a tourist office and heritage centre along with a highly regarded 18 hole, par 70 golf course on its outskirts. The Woollen Mill at Otterburn is a popular destination with visitors only 8 miles east and the National Trust property at Wallington Hall is well worth a visit. Pony trekking, windsurfing, sailing and ferry trips are only a small sample of the many outdoor activities that can be arranged at Kielder Water - Northern Europe's largest manmade lake - which is cradled by Kielder Forest Park, nearby. The historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its majestic abbey is only 17 miles away and the ancient town of Morpeth is 25 miles east. The World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall Country, England's largest Heritage Site within this most northerly of National Parks is within easy driving distance and Vindolanda, Thirwell Castle, a quarry wildlife park, The Roman Army Museum and Walltown Craggs - the highest remaining section of Hadrian's Wall - are all interesting visitor attractions close by. Ramblers and cyclists will enjoy the miles of bridleways and footpaths surrounding this area whilst absorbing the panoramic vistas of the wild and un spoilt countryside across the Northumberland National Park.
