Accommodation overview: This coastline is renowned for its miles of sweeping white sandy beaches which are always quiet, whatever the time of year. The area is a paradise for surfers, body boarders and beach lovers generally. The pretty village of Bettyhill, above Torrisdale bay, has good local facilities including pubs and a restaurant, as well as an excellent indoor swimming pool and leisure centre. There is also a museum documenting the fascinating history of the Highland clearances and by following the Strathnaver Trail visitors can experience life in the Highlands from Neolithic times through the Viking era to the modern day. The area is a wild-life watchers paradise. Whales, basking sharks, porpoises, seals and otters are all seen in the area. At Melvich just along the coast there is also a colony of puffins which can be seen and at Forsinard, Strath Halladale, there is an RSPB nature reserve, where local rangers will take visitors to explore the bird life, flora and fauna close to hand. Nearby Borgie forest has a number of superb woodland trails, ideal for walking or cycling. Golf, canoeing, cycling, hill-walking, climbing and horse riding are all available locally. Heading south is the Strath of Kildonan, site of a 19th century gold-rush where it is still possible to pan for gold in the River Helmsdale - some visitors even claim to have paid for their holiday by selling the gold - but you must stake your claim by posting the date and amount of gold found in the old stone letter box! There are a number of excellent local restaurants, pubs and cafes in the small towns and villages along the coast. Beechwood provides an ideal base for exploring this spell-binding and unforgettable region of the UK.

Accommodation overview: Burnside Cottage is situated on a south facing hillside above the small Highland village of Bonar Bridge in Sutherland. It enjoys lovely views across the Kyle of Sutherland to the hills and mountains beyond. The cottage was originally built in the 19th century, adjoining earlier croft buildings and has since been sympathetically extended and recently upgraded to provide bright and spacious accommodation throughout. The cottage is surrounded by its own large, mature garden grounds, which are a real feature of the property. Lawned areas are interspersed with pretty shrubs, mature trees and attractive old stone patios. A conservatory along the length of the cottage provided an excellent viewing point over the gardens and surrounding hills and valleys. With an open plan kitchen/ breakfast/ living room, separate formal dining room and cosy lounge with lovely open fireplace, all with superb views, it offers very generous accommodation in a beautiful setting. The cottage is situated in a quiet country location yet it is just a short (1/2 mile) walk to the centre of Bonar Bridge. It is a pretty village set on the banks of the Kyle of Sutherland, the confluence of four renowned Highland salmon rivers, and offers good facilities, including restaurants, pubs and small shops. Burnside is a superb location for a Highland getaway, either for relaxing completely or indulging in the wide variety of local activities. Facilities on the doorstep include mountain biking trails, golf (there are 11 courses in the area, including Bonar Bridge and the championship course at nearby Dornoch), superb fishing (sea, loch and river), hill walking, climbing, canoeing, horse riding and sailing. There are a number of Pictish sites around the village and there are numerous woodland paths to explore offering superb views across the mountains. Bonar Bridge is also ideally situated for exploring the whole of the Highland region. Watch salmon leaping at the Falls of Shin, just ten minutes drive away, visit Royal Dornoch, with its beautiful sandstone Cathedral and award winning sandy beach. Take a trip across to the west coast, just 45 miles away, and explore the pretty fishing village of Lochinver and the stunning white shell sand bays and emerald green sea along this pretty Atlantic coastline. A round trip to Durness, situated on the north west tip of Scotland and across to John O'Groats to experience some of the most awe-inspiring and unspoilt landscapes to be found anywhere in the British Isles. Stop off on the way back to view Dunrobin Castle. With its gardens modelled on Versailles, the castle was previously the seat of the Dukes of Sutherland. The local area is also renowned for its wildlife. Ospreys, golden eagles, buzzards, seals, pine martens and the occasional otter are all seen in the region. Property has electric storage heaters.

To the south lies Inverness, the Capital city of the Highlands, which is just 40 minutes drive away. Bonar Bridge has excellent local facilities, including a bakery, butcher, village store, cafe, pubs and a bistro serving freshly cooked dishes using locally sourced produce. The village also has its own 9 hole golf course. The Kyle of Sutherland is home to an incredible array of wildlife, such as resident otters, a vast array of birds, including visiting osprey, Whooper swans, golden eagles, buzzards and deer that roam its banks.. The area is renowned for its outdoor pursuits. Spectacular mountain bike trails just one mile from the cottage offer easy routes for beginners as well as extremely challenging ones for experienced riders - and all will appreciate the amazing views from the hill top! Fishing is second to none, with 14 miles of some of the most prolific salmon rivers available by day ticket to visitors. There are also some lovely hill lochs for trout, and sea fishing is also a popular pastime. Non anglers will also be enchanted by a visit to the Falls of Shin.
