Accommodation overview: Taigh Mhairi is a detached single storey cottage set in lovely fully enclosed gardens backing onto woodland, with a river below. It is situated in a quiet backwater on a no through road close to the centre of Portree. Taigh Mhairi (Gaelic for Mhairi's house) is named after the owner's mother whose ancestors have lived on Skye for many generations. The property boasts a large lounge/dining room with an attractive open fire as its focal point. The pretty bedrooms and bright modern kitchen and bathroom all combine to offer a beautifully presented cottage with a real homely feel. Taigh Mhairi is situated just a 1/4 mile from the centre of Portree, the 'capital' of Skye. A 'nature walk' leads directly from the cottage to Portree, following the river line along the back of the property. Set around its natural harbour, with spectacular hills and mountains beyond, Portree is a quintessentially picturesque fishing village. Brightly painted cottages cluster round the active harbour where some of the finest fish restaurants can be found. There is also an excellent selection of local shops, pubs and other restaurants as well as a swimming pool and leisure centre close by. The nearby Aros centre has a theatre, cinema and concert hall where regular performances are held. The Isle of Skye is renowned for its mountains, coasts, historical sites and stunning scenery. Surrounded by miles of breathtaking coastline, awe inspiring mountain ranges, amazing unique rock formations and magical castles and historical sites, the visitor is spoilt for choice. The area is a paradise for those who enjoy walking, climbing, fishing, sailing, kayaking, mountain biking, bird watching or just totally relaxing and enjoying island living at its best. It is also an ideal base for exploring further afield. From Uig you can take a boat trip to the Outer Hebrides for the day. Boat trips also run from Portree harbour to encounter the local sea life close to hand, including rare sea eagles, which nest in the area. Property is all at ground level, has electric heaters.
