Accommodation overview: Castle Lachlan is a beautiful Scottish baronial house set within the Strathlachlan Estate, which has 1500 acres of land and provides a stunning view down to Loch Fyne and Lachlan Bay. The Castle is the home of the Clan MacLachlan and the owner, Euan MacLachlan is the 25th Clan Chief. The ruins of Old Castle Lachlan can still be found on the shore of Loch Fyne. It was the Clan home until bombarded from the sea in 1746 by an English warship following the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden. This was retribution against the MacLachlans for joining the unsuccessful rebellion. Lachlan MacLachlan, the Chief, ADC to Bonnie Prince Charlie, was killed in the battle. The New Castle started life as a Queen Anne style house at the end of the 18th century. Then at the end of the 19th century the Scottish baronial transformation was undertaken. It has now been cleverly divided so that the grander southwest facing front is now available for self-catering holidays. The accommodation is spread over four floors with the kitchen, playroom and shower room on the ground floor. The first floor has the main living area with drawing room, dining room leading to a billiard room with full sized table; all first-floor rooms have the benefit of a sea view. The second floor has four bedrooms, all except one have a sea view; the master bedroom has an ensuite and dressing room. The third attic floor has the remaining three bedrooms, with a single bedroom positioned within the Tower. The Estate is mainly sheep farming with some woodland. There are three miles of coastline, nearly all of which is only accessible on foot. Many different levels of walks are available locally from gentle strolls to more adventurous trails. The gardens have a tennis court which is available for use by guests. Seasonal sporting activities are available locally, booking essential. Clay pigeon shooting and quad bike safaris can also be arranged. The family also owns the Inver Cottage Restaurant which is only a 15 minute walk away providing food throughout the day and evening. A village shop and petrol station can be found in Strachur, only 6 miles away. Strathlachlan is a great location to explore. The surrounding area has sea lochs to investigate, mountains to climb, and is rich in wildlife and history. The Argyll Forest, part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, is on the doorstep, and contains numerous forest tracks, marked walks, cycle ways and a number of wonderful waterfalls. Serious walkers should try the new Cowal Way, a long distance trail running from Portavadie to Arrochar. There are many good eateries within easy driving distance all offering a range of local produce; Loch Fyne Oyster Bar for example, is famous for its outstanding sea-food dishes. A number of gardens are open to the public including Ardkinglas, Crarae and Benmore Botanic Gardens which has an avenue of Giant Redwoods. There are four golf courses in the area and many opportunities for a spot of fishing. Facilities to launch a boat can be arranged and Tighnabruaich has a sailing school. Those needing a spot of retail therapy can travel slightly further afield to Dunoon, which has excellent shopping, leisure facilities and a cinema. The Isle of Bute is only a short drive and ferry crossing away and a visit to the fabulous Victorian Gothic Mount Stuart House is a must. Inveraray is also a great day out with the Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll or a visit to 19th Century Inveraray Jail, a fun and interesting day out for all the family. The Cowal Peninsula is a veritable haven for peace and relaxation yet also provides a wide range of activities. Only an hour and a half's drive from Glasgow, Castle Lachlan makes the ideal location for the gathering of family or a group holiday, weddings or to mark that special occasion in a unique and exciting way. The property is heated by oil and wood.
