Situated in 20 acres of landscaped garden grounds right on the southern shores of Loch Ness, this really is the most exquisite location imaginable. The abbey was built on the original site of the fort that gives Fort Augustus its name. For many years a Benedictine monastery and school, these wonderful and historic buildings, with cloistered walks, stained glass windows and thick stone walls have been superbly converted into high quality living accommodation. Number 8 Old School is situated on the first floor of the old bell-tower and enjoys wonderful views across the landscaped grounds to the mountains beyond. The spacious open plan lounge, dining room and kitchen is beautifully presented with deep leather sofas, large dining table and exceptionally well-equipped kitchen with built-in appliances. The large en-suite bedroom, second good-sized twin bedroom and family bathroom are all immaculately presented. The facilities in the grounds are a real feature of this property including a tennis court, croquet lawn, badminton, cricket pitch, moorings for visitors' boats on the lock, purpose built barbeque and even a giant chess set in the charming cloistered gardens. There is also a full-sized snooker table in the club lounge, formerly the monks' refectory a superb wood-panelled room with stained glass windows. Children will enjoy the adventure playground and there is an excellent restaurant in the old Boat House in the Abbey grounds. Fort Augustus is a charming village. Its focal point is a dramatic and picturesque series of locks which provide access to boats from the Caledonian Canal to and from Loch Ness. The wide tow paths and pretty lawned areas along the side of the canal provide an ideal vantage point from which to sit and watch the numerous small crafts navigating the lock gates. There is a variety of good cafes and restaurants here, as well as an interesting and unusual selection of small shops. Fort Augustus is situated half way along the Great Glen Way, which runs from Fort William to Inverness along the side of the canal to provide superb cycling and scenic walking along its 73 mile path. The river Oich also runs close by; both are just a short walk from the Abbey. There is an excellent 9-hole golf course which is open to visitors. Mountain biking is very popular in the area and the recently opened Laggan Wolf Tracks provide some wonderful and stretching downhill runs for all abilities. Boat trips on Loch Ness run from the village. Visitors wishing to learn more about the loch and its elusive monster, Nessie, should head for Drumnadrochit, about 20 miles north on the shores of the loch. This pretty village has two excellent museums offering scientific studies on the various sightings, with photographic illustrations. Just outside the village is the stunningly beautiful Urquhart Castle, which sits on a promontory overlooking Loch Ness. Heading west, the wild beauty of Glen Affic, one of the most beautiful and scenic Highland glens, has wonderful walks, with waterfalls, old Caledonian forests and amazing flora and fauna. Horse riding and pony-trekking in the surrounding hills is regularly enjoyed and ski-ing is available on The Nevis Range near Fort William, approx 30 miles away or in the Cairngorms near Aviemore, just over an hour's drive from Fort Augustus. Whether you enjoy outdoor pursuits, historical trails, exploring attractive villages or just taking in the spectacular scenery, there is something for everyone in this superb area of the Western Highlands. Accommodation overview: commemorating the life of Dunbeath's most famous resident, the novelist, Neil Gunn. High above the harbour the impressive Dunbeath Castle is situated on the cliff face. Dunbeath Heritage Centre offers a wealth of information about this interesting and historic area. Dunbeath also has a restaurant, pub and a small selection of shops. The superb wide sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, small bays and variety of old fishing villages all along the north east coast add to the magic of this distinctive and unexplored part of Scotland. The area is renowned for its bird and sea life. Puffins, Great Skua, otters, seals, dolphins and whales are all seen in and around the coast. A highly recommended boat trip runs from Wick to encounter the sea life close to hand and to explore this fascinating coastline from a different perspective. Historical and archaeological sites and places of interest abound. The fairy tale Castle of Mey, beautifully restored by the late Queen Mother is a must. This most northerly castle in the British Isles has a fascinating history and the gardens are simply stunning. From Scrabster or John O Groats take a day trip to the Orkney Isles and explore Neolithic villages, standing stones, Scapa Flow and the amazing Italian chapel built by prisoners during the Second World War. The town of Wick, approximately 20 miles away is also steeped in history. Once an ancient Viking settlement, the town plan is medieval in origin. Today it offers a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Close by to Strathallan there are many excellent golf courses, together with horse riding, fishing, sailing and cycling and hill walking. There is a particularly lovely walk direct from the property, along the side of the river through to the hills above the village. Just a short drive south is the historic town of Helmsdale and the Strath of Kildonan, site of a 19th century gold rush where it is still possible to pan for gold (but you must stake your claim by posting the date and amount of gold found in the old stone letter box).
